An Online Only auction is an easy and exciting way to buy carpets at auction. Bid from home on your desktop, mobile or tablet.

This auction is available to online bidders only. Unlike a room auction which takes place in real time, where there is an auctioneer and audience, an Online Only auction is automatically conducted 100% online via our website.
- All bids placed via the website prior to the start of the live auction are executed immediately against the current highest bid
- All absentee bids placed prior to the start of the auction will be executed during the live auction
- If placing absentee bids prior to the auction, any time you are outbid by another bidder, you will receive an automated email notification to let you know, thus giving you the opportunity to increase your bid
- Even if you have placed absentee bids prior to the start of the auction, feel free to watch the live auction on Sunday and you will have the opportunity to increase your bid during the auction if you see you have been outbid

Registering to Bid

Even if you have attended one of our live auctions in person, if you haven't used our online platform to bid at one of our online auctions, you will need to become a member and fill out a form that will enable you to create a username and password. Just click on any of the 'LOGIN TO BID' icons displayed underneath each catalogue image and become a member. It takes about two minutes.

How Absentee Bidding Works

When absentee bidding you have the choice to either bid at the next increment or you can place the maximum amount you wish to bid on that particular piece and the system will bid for you up to your maximum amount. So if the current bid is at $300 and you place a bid of $500, the system will show you as the highest bidder at $350. If someone comes along and bids $400 then the system will outbid them on your behalf and place a $450 bid for you. The system will only ever bid up to your maximum bid and will never exceed it. Your maximum bid will only ever be reached if there is another bidder who has placed a bid one increment below your maximum bid. Others bidder will not know what your maximum bid is. Anytime your maximum bid is outbid by another bidder, you will receive an automated email alert to let you know you have been outbid, thus giving you the opportunity to increase your bid. If you place a bid and somebody has already placed a bid higher than yours, you will see an on screen notification immediately that will alert you that there is already a higher bid than yours, thus giving you the opportunity to increase your bid if you desire.

When placing a bid you must click on 'CONFIRM' to confirm your bid. You will see a 10 second count down allowing you a period of 10 seconds to confirm that you have entered the correct amount. This just gives you the opportunity to double-check that you have entered the correct amount. If you don't confirm your bid it won't be registered.

Tips for successful bidding

Bidding during the live streaming auction is very simple and clear, but if it's your first time, it's a good idea is to login a few lots before your desired piece just to get a feel for how the system works. That way you can watch to see other lots selling and get a feel for how quickly the bidding goes and how to bid. All bids are final and cannot be cancelled.

Terms and Conditions

These Terms and Conditions govern all auction sales conducted by Charleston’s Fine Art Auctions Pty Limited ABN 68 079 537 670 (“CA” or “auctioneer“).

1. Registration – Any prospective bidder must register online to bid. Upon registering a security check on your credit card will deduct one cent and this will be refunded immediately. A pre-authorisation will also be done on your credit card for the amount of $1. While appearing as a one dollar debit on your account, your balance will not be affected and the balance amount will be at the same amount that it was prior to the pre-authorisation

2. Buyer’s Premium and GST – All bids are taken to be inclusive of GST payable. The successful purchaser in addition to payment of the amount of the successful bid will also be responsible for payment of a buyer’s premium equivalent to 19.8% (inclusive of GST) of the amount of the successful bid for the Lot. Such a buyer’s premium shall be payable at the same time and in the same manner as the hammer price is paid for the Lot.

3. A bid cannot be cancelled under any circumstances. An absentee bid cannot be lowered once placed. Please note that Charleston's Fine Art Auctions accepts no responsibility for your actions in bidding, bidding accidently, pressing an incorrect button, bidding the wrong amount or on an incorrect item, computer hacking or a child or other person bidding on your registration. All sales are final.

6. Conduct of the auction – The auctioneer retains the absolute discretion to control the auction process at all times. Without limitation the auctioneer may: (a) refuse any bids; (b) change the order of sale of the Lots; (c) advance the bidding at his absolute discretion; (d) place a reserve at any Lot; (e) bid on behalf of any prospective purchaser with or without disclosure; (f) place a bid or bids on behalf on the owner; (g) withdraw any Lot from the sale; (h) offer a Lot for re-sale in the event of any dispute; (h) require a successful purchaser to pay forthwith the whole or part of any purchase price; (i) forbid any party from photographing any of the Lots or recording an auction; and/or (j) take bids from absentee bidders participating by telephone bid or by written bid left with the auctioneer. In the event of any dispute as to the bidding in respect of any Lot, the auctioneer shall have absolute discretion to settle the dispute as sole arbitrator and his decision shall be final and binding. All bids are final and cannot be cancelled under any circumstances.

6. The purchaser shall be the highest bidder – The highest bidder shall on the fall of the hammer for a particular Lot be taken to be the successful purchaser and will be taken to have entered into a binding contract (subject to the conditions set out below) with the auctioneer as owner of the Lot in its own right or with the auctioneer as the duly appointed agent of the owner (as the case may be).

7. Passing of risk and retention of title – As from the fall of the hammer all risks in relation to the Lot passes to the successful purchaser notwithstanding that the title to the Lot sold remains with the owner until such time as payment for the Lot has been made in full. The auctioneer does not provide insurance cover for purchasers. Purchasers should arrange their own “all risks” insurance cover with effect immediately after the auction.

9. Method of Payment – Payment is to be made by Monday, June 2nd at 11am (AEST) latest. An invoice will be emailed to successful purchasers on Monday night. Payment is to be made by EFT (use your surname as the transaction reference and email payment confirmation to info@charlestons.com.au and also within the email let us know if you require delivery or if you will pick up), Visa, MasterCard, American Express (call 02 9318 2680) to make credit card payment over the phone). If payment is made by electronic funds transfer the auctioneer has the discretion to hold the merchandise until the funds has been verified. If payment is not made by 11am (AEST) on Monday, June 2nd, you authorise Charleston's Fine Art Auctions to charge your credit card in full for the invoice amount.

8. Refunds and exchange – To the maximum extent permitted by law, all sales are final and no refunds or exchanges will be given under any circumstances. Notwithstanding if after the fall of the hammer, and within the period of 5 years after the date of the auction, the auctioneer shall receive from the successful purchaser notice in writing accompanied by the written opinion of a competent expert or authority that the Lot purchased is not as described in the auctioneer’s catalogue or as represented by the auctioneer will within 14 days of receipt of such notification refund to the successful purchaser the full purchase price paid subject to the return of the Lot purchased in the same condition and state of repair at the time of the fall of the hammer and subject further to the auctioneer being satisfied as to the validity of the claim. Please note that we endeavour to mention any imperfection, the absence of this information in the catalogue does not automatically imply that the lot is free from defect.

9. Carriers – The auctioneer may identify third party carriers to assist purchasers with packaging and transportation of Lots purchased but accepts no liability or responsibility for the acts or omissions of such carriers.

10. Governing Law – These terms and conditions shall be governed by the law of the Australian State or Territory in which the subject auction is taking place and by participating in the relevant auction the purchaser shall be taken to have consented to the exclusive jurisdiction of such courts.

11. Definitions – In this agreement: (a) “Fall of the hammer” means such time as a purchaser has bid for a particular Lot and the auctioneer has acknowledged that purchaser as being the successful purchaser at which time a binding contract subject to these terms and conditions have been entered into. (b) “Auctioneers” means CA or its duly appointed employees, servants and agents. (c) “Lot” means any Lot or Lots for sale either individually or as a group at the auctioneer’s sole discretion.
